UAL: Book Launch
Story
Centre for Circular Design at Chelsea College of Arts, University of the Arts London approached me as they were looking for a visual identity for a book launch of a research publication ‘Design Materials and Making for Social Change’.
CCD combine academic and industry research to create new connections. Together they explore design for circular contexts in emerging technology, systems design, materials, tools, user behaviour and social innovation.
The book launch was held shortly after the publication date in June 2023 and was an invite-only event. It included an exhibition of materials, as well as panel discussions with the editors Professor Rebecca Early and Dr. Rosie Hornbuckle, researchers and some of the authors.
About the book:
“Design Materials and Making for Social Change spans the two interconnected worlds of the material and the social, at different scales and in different contexts, and explores the value of the knowledge, skills and methods that emerge when design researchers work directly with materials and hold making central to their practice.
This book celebrates the role of materials and making in design research by demonstrating the diverse and complex interplay between disciplines and the cultures it enables, when in search of alternative futures.”

The identity needed to be striking and flexible, but not overpower the book cover artwork—which had already been produced. I matched the colours and type from the book cover and devised this simple identity to work across multiple formats and sizes. The inclusion of some of the black and white images from the book created some striking graphic layouts.
I supported CCD with the design of not only a suite of logos but various other materials for use in the exhibition and at the launch event—including a program booklet, film list, exhibition background posters, tabletop labels and a Powerpoint presentation template.
